What Is The Target Market?

That one simple question can mean the difference between a marketer being successful and feeling frustrated and defeated. In reality, the first thing we as marketers should be doing before we start any type of product creation, sales pages, etc… is to identify the market that we are targeting and then find out as much as we can about them.  What is their education? What are their interests? Are they mostly men or women? What is their typical age?  What is their annual income? Do they like sports?  Do they like movies?  Do they like food?  These questions might seem irrelevant when you are selling or promoting a course about dog training, but they couldn’t be MORE relevant.

If you don’t know the most basic things about your target market, you will literally have no idea how to appeal to them in your marketing materials.  This might seem a little bit strange at first, but think about this.  Would you be more likely to buy something from someone you can relate to or someone who seems to be interested in things completely different than you. Would you trust someone more that you share an interest in the same sport with or someone that doesn’t enjoy the same things as you?  Human nature is a funny thing and the more that you can relate with people, the better connection you intrinsically will have with them.  It is just the way it is.

How Do We Figure Out Our Target Market?

There are quite a few ways to find your target market, but I am just going to touch on one in this post that anybody can utilize. If you really want to figure out more about your target market, why re-invent the wheel when your competitors have already done the research for you.  What you will want to do is locate your top 3 or 5 competitors in the same market and look at how they are targeting their marketing materials. Read their sales copy, sign up to their mailing lists and figure out as much as you can about how they are targeting their market.

The more you can gather about your target market by looking at your competitors, the less you will have to learn on the go after you actually create your product and materials.

I Have My Target Market, Now What?

Now that you have a good idea of your target market, you should ask yourself a couple of things?

• Are there enough people in my target market to reach my income goals?
• Do I understand my target market well enough to figure out what makes them want to buy?
• Can my target market afford to by my product or services?  Should I raise or lower my price?
• Can I reach my target market?
• Are their sub-niches within my target market that I can market to?
• Can I relate to my target market within my marketing materials?

Once you have done these things you should now have a very good idea of who you are marketing to and how you are going to do it. Congratulations! Your chances of success just went way up.

Targeting Your Market Conclusion

Now this may seem like a tedious and sometimes confusing process to go through, but it is worth its weight in gold.  Even if you only get it half right, you will be that much more ahead and better equipped to sell to your market.  The biggest thing is that you at least do SOMETHING in determining your target market, even if you only spend 10 minutes on it by looking at your biggest competitors, it will do wonders. If you have a product and sales page already, but have never paid much worry to your target market, then try doing a little bit of research and see what you can find out.  Then go make a couple of tweaks to your sales copy or promotion materials and see what happens.  You may just be surprised by the results.  You are likely to find that there is a reason that all those marketing guru types always tell you to know your market.

One of the most over-looked pieces of Search Engine Optimization is the proper use of On Page SEO. Most marketers and bloggers figure that if they just use their targeted keyword a few times in their posts that they are doing the needed optimization for Google to show them the love. Then of course they move all focus to the off-page optimization such as building backlinks and social presence. The fact is that their are a number of things that the search engines still love to see in your posts to show that you are optimizing your posts for a better user experience and thus will your site will be rewarded with a better search engine ranking.

On Page SEO Tactic 1: Google loves to see multimedia

Every single post that you make should include a picture  placed among the text.  Google loves to see this because it increases the user experience and Google is all about providing sites to searchers that give them a good user experience. Not only is it important to include a relevant image to your post, but it is also very important to make sure it is labelled with a keyword rich title and alt text.  If you are unsure of how to do this, then just do a search on inserting images into a post and you will easily be able to find out how to do this.  It is also useful to include youtube videos in your posts occasionally. There is no need to place a Youtube video in every one of your posts, but when there is a relevant one that you can add, it will help your On-Page SEO.

On Page SEO Tactic 2: Use Header Tags

Many people ignore using the header tags because they think that Google ignores them now since they were abused so much in the earlier days of SEO.  But using header tags that contain your targeted keyword tells Google and the other search engines “Hey, here is my main keyword!  Right here!”  And don’t just use the H1 tag, use H2, H3 and even H4 tags.  If you can include your targeted keyword or a variance of it in each of the header tags, then you will be doing really well.

On Page SEO Tactic 3: The RIGHT Keyword Density

The common belief seems to be that a higher keyword density such as 5% is best and what Google likes to see most. However, through testing and reading other marketers findings, I believe that 1 to 2% keyword density is optimal for your on page SEO.  I have seen a site that had 3% keyword density ranking on the second page of Google, but when the keyword density was changed to just under 2%, it all of a sudden bounced up to page 1.  Now whether this was just Google still doing it’s dance or if it really was the change in keyword density, I can’t say with 100% certainty.  But since then I have been using 1 to 2% keyword density with great success.  No one knows for sure but Google what the optimal keyword density is, but I have gotten good results with the above guidelines and I think you will too.

On Page SEO Tactic 4: How Much Content
The old saying goes, content is king, and it still really holds a lot of truth today. But exactly how much is optimal in Google’s eyes. I heard a stat somewhere that the number 1 ranked result on Google for any given keyword has on average over 3000 words of content on the front page.  I have also found that Google often ranks longer articles much better than shorter ones.  So instead of posting 500 word articles all of the time, try posting some articles that are 800 to 1000 words long.  Another trick for WordPress blogs is to go into your Reading settings and make the number of posts on the first page to show be 20 or more.  Also, the posts should be the full articles, never use excerpts.  You want as much content as possible to be showing on your front page.  You should be able to have 10,000 words of solid content on your front page if you have 20 posts showing.

Also, it is important to post content on a consistent basis, daily or every other day is best in the early stages of your blog or website.  Then after a couple of weeks, you can taper off a bit.  You should start to notice your rankings improving just by consistently posting content.  Eventually, you should only have to post once every week or two or perhaps even less once you have achieved the ranking that you desired.

On Page SEO Tactic 5: Interlinking
Each and every article that you post should have an internal link pointing back to another post on your blog or website.  This way as you build link juice to your site, that link juice will be passed between the inner pages of your site rather than just going to the one page.  This will create a powerful effect for your blog and should not be undervalued.  It is also important to mix in some links to other authority sites or related blog posts.  This is more natural looking to Google and will show that you are linking out to other quality content that your users would enjoy.  Going back to the concept that Google wants to provide search results that give a rich user experience, this will show Google that your site does just that.

On Page SEO Tactic 6: Social Integration
Now a days, Google puts a lot of weight into the social media side of things.  If you can show Google that your site is popular or being talked about in the socialsphere, then that will give more authority and credibility to your site.  So as far as On Page SEO, make sure that you include social buttons such as a Facebook Like button, a tweet this post type button, a Stumbleupon button and a Digg button for starters.  There may be more that you wish to include, but those are some of the biggest.  Make sure you find a plugin that will add these buttons to each of your posts.  If you can get users to “Like” or “Tweet” your posts, it will give a nice boost to your rankings, so get these social proof buttons on your site.

On Page SEO: Conclusion

I think this about sums up the key points of On Page SEO that will greatly increase your chances of ranking well in Google. There are more complex things that I may get into in a future post, but these are the easiest to implement and will have the largest effect in my opinion on your rankings.  The best thing about On Page SEO is that you are completely in control of how well it is done.  You could either keyword stuff and call it good or you could do half of the things I went through above, or you could do all of them.  The choice is yours and no one is stopping you from choosing the exact amount of On Page search engine optimization that you want. However, these things are not very time consuming and there are even plugins that will help you to see just how well you have done at optimizing your posts.

There is one WordPress Plugin in particular that checks almost all of the things that I detailed above. Plus it will analyze your blog and tell you exactly what you need to do to increase your rankings.  I have been using it for a while and it makes my On Page optimization a breeze and is giving me some incredible information.  I can hardly work without it now.

What Drives You To Succeed?

What drives you? This should be a question you ask yourself daily. What stokes the fire inside of your belly and gives you the desire to do whatever it takes to succeed? If you don’t know what it is, then you may as well just call it quits right now. Sound a little extreme? Well that is just how important this is. If you have nothing that motivates you, then you are likely to have a few successes here and there, but never quite reach the level of success that you crave. If you have nothing that drives you, you will easily find excuses to put things off or avoid them all together. Things that may be vital to your success. This could be the difference between living the internet business dream and being stuck in the 9 to 5 rat race the rest of your life. SEO 2007: The Know-How you Need to Succeed

One of the biggest challenges that all webmasters face is of course the ever daunting task of SEO . If you are unsure what it is, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, meaning how you as a webmaster can get Google, Yahoo, and MSN among others to rank your website in the top search results for the keywords you are targeting. When I personally approach SEO, I do not look at it as just a single task at hand. Instead, I break it down, most notably into 2 main categories that I can focus on.

In its simplest form, I like to divide SEO down into 2 more manageable areas. The first area that I break it into is On-site Optimization, and the second area, predictably is Off-site Optimization. Both are important, many webmasters do not grasp or utilize this. Some of them preach that on-site optimization is truly the only important form of SEO, while others will tell you that off-site optimization is what will get you top rankings in the search engines. But the real deal is that they are both important, and you should not ignore either of them. So what is the difference between the two.

In a nutshell, On-site optimization is the editing and coding of your actual website to increase optimization. Off-site optimization is the Link Popularity, Link Relevance, and anything else that is not a direct change to your own webpage. For a good example of just how powerful Off-site optimization is, Google the word “failure“. I am sure that George Bush is not optimizing for that term anywhere on the Whitehouse webpage. In my opinion, the key factors of SEO, in no particular order are:

1) Link Popularity and Link Relevance (Off-site) 2) Internal Linking Structure (On-site) 3) Content Relevance (On-site) 4) Crawl-ability / Code Optimization (On-site)

This may seem like I a dumbing down of the art of SEO, which in some regards it is. However, the key factors that I just mentioned above are the basis and are easily broken down into much finer detail, such as the kind that you may find in an in-depth book or report. An important thing to keep in mind in 2007 is that getting high rankings on the Search Engines is not going to happen overnight, sometimes not even for months, just because you have optimized your webpage. If this were 7 or 8 years ago, then keyword stuffing and meta-tags would work just fine. But that tactic will just not cut it in todays competitive search engine market. Do not let this dissuade you though. Just make sure that you utilize a balanced attack of on-site and off-site optimization, through utilization of social-networking sites, link partnering, quality content, text link campaigns and more.
